Rose Hall Great House

Rose Hall Great House is a historic mansion located in Montego Bay, Jamaica. It is perhaps best known for its association with the legend of Annie Palmer, the “White Witch of Rose Hall,” who was said to have been a cruel plantation owner in the early 19th century.

The mansion was built in the 1770s and was initially owned by John Palmer, a wealthy Englishman. After his death, the property passed to his grandnephew, John Rose Palmer, who completed the construction of the house in the 1780s. The mansion is an excellent example of Georgian architecture and is set amidst beautiful gardens overlooking the Caribbean Sea.

The legend of Annie Palmer, the “White Witch,” emerged in the early 19th century. According to local lore, Annie Palmer was a beautiful but malevolent woman who married John Rose Palmer. It is said that she murdered him, as well as two subsequent husbands, and was involved in the brutal treatment of her slaves. Her reputation as a cruel mistress earned her the nickname “White Witch.”
